The coastline around Cable John Cove that really shows off the rugged side of Newfoundland. The cliffs here drop straight down toward the water, with layers of exposed rock, small sea stacks and a sheltered cove below. I photographed this scene during a sunrise when the low light was hitting the cliffs and bringing out the warm colours in the rock, while the water and sky took on deeper blue and turquoise tones. Cable John Cove is on the Bonavista Peninsula near Spillars Cove and is part of one of the most impressive stretches of coastline in the area. The Klondike Trail follows the cliffs around the cove, with views looking out over the Atlantic and some pretty spectacular rock formations. It’s one of those Newfoundland places where you can spend a lot of time walking around and still keep finding different compositions. The combination of the towering cliffs, smooth water and evening light gives this photograph a strong Newfoundland feel without being overly busy. It would work particularly well as a larger print where you can really see the detail in the rock and coastline. I could see this hanging nicely in a living room, cottage, office or entranceway, especially in a space with natural wood, neutral colours or a coastal feel. It would also make a good piece for someone from Newfoundland who wants a bit of the coastline on the wall, or for anyone who has travelled to the Bonavista Peninsula and wants something to remember the place by.
